Forest Tales is an exhibition curated by Studio Swine displaying 22 hardwood furniture pieces atop a “mountain” of packing crates, repurposed from their original use in transporting the items. The exhibition was created for the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) for the Milan design week 2022, it showcased pieces from designers like Thomas Heatherwick and Maria Bruun, emphasising sustainability and minimal waste.

Studio Swine assembled the installation using a modelling technique, and the crates were painted with water-based paint by La Scala theatre painters. Following the exhibition, the crates will continue their life cycle, used again for storage and transport—ensuring a “leave no trace” concept. Inspired by American forest engravings, the designs celebrate the rich cultural and environmental legacy of forests, underlining hardwood’s role in carbon capture and sustainable design.
