The Humble Administrator’s Chair and Table draws inspiration from traditional Chinese aesthetics, merging elements of the classic Ming chair with a modern Scandinavian minimalist design. Part of the Connected project, it was developed with Benchmark Furniture and the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) to address sustainable design during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The chair’s design leverages a highly skilled steam-bending technique, using American red oak to create its intricate, multi-dimensional curves. This complex process involved six artisans and a custom-made jig, highlighting the traditional craftsmanship and material strength. The accompanying table, crafted from warm-toned American cherry wood, has a clean-lined, straightforward aesthetic with a shelf that also reinforces the structure. This combination of materials exemplifies the balance of beauty, sustainability, and functionality.
